Pathum Thani Province, just north of Bangkok on the alluvial flats of the Chao Phraya basin, offers a terroir shaped by canal irrigation rather than the seasonal rainfall the southern provinces depend on. By grafting and air-layering these beetle-shaped phenotypes onto established rootstock, and drawing on the area's rich alluvial soils, the local irrigated farms eliminate the unpredictable variation found in seed-grown trees. The strain takes its name from the maeng da, the giant water beetle whose wide-bottomed silhouette the leaf mirrors — not the "pimp grade" translation commonly repeated in the West. The result is a reliably large-bottomed leaf, occasionally carrying serrated horns, with a grassy, apple-fresh character and laboratory testing at 1.4–1.8% mitragynine throughout the year. Our Green, White and Red are all drawn from this same consistent stock, separated only by drying and fermenting method.
